Theoretical orientation
I believe that due to the unique nature of school counseling, many different theories may be used in individual, group and classroom counseling. Ultimately, it is my perception that in a school setting, solution focused and choice theory are most commonly used in goal setting and problem solving. Often, I employ techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy when dealing with cognitive dysfunctions such as; anxiety, self-doubt and impulse-control. Furthermore, regardless of the student or situation an effect school counselor should be person-centered, demonstrated the competencies of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence.
